Hello friends and new subscribers!
The Sweet Days of September series is starting a week late due to technical issues with the video posts, but I’ve found a solution and I’m so excited to begin today!
Note: If you’d like to leave a comment, you can do so either on, the blog post using the button at the bottom of the post, or on the video itself using the comments section beneath it. It is my sincerest hope that a robust dialogue between subscribers will ensue!
If you’re new to the Sweet September Day’s series, the original conversations and exercises were recorded live on Facebook over 18 days + a bonus day in September of 2020. The series is all about those messages we carry internally as artists that will either encourage us, or block us, in our art making, and in life.
Today’s video, Day 1, and every other day’s video for the remainder of the series is the conversational portion of the series, discussing what I call the Intuitive Voice, or our core most authentic selves, and the Art Critic, or the internal critic messages we carry. Opposite days are the art exercises that accompanied each conversation, designed to highlight and illustrate the key points.
The supply list for those interested in doing the art exercises is simple. You need:
Something to glue on—I use 140# Strathmore cold press water color paper for my substrate, but any heavyweight paper will do.
Something to glue with—this is your adhesive of choice and an applicator to apply the adhesive.
Something to glue—your collage fodder, which can be as simple as junk mail and old magazines if you don’t have a stash of materials to work with.
Without further ado, I hope you all enjoy the series!
With gratitude,
Crystal Marie
Today’s Conversation begins with a tongue in cheek overview of the messages we carry internally and how they appear as chatter in our head. Through the practice of turning off the devices that are so easy to pick up and numb out, working in the studio in silence, I share how I began to identify these messages and relegate them to two categories; those of the Intuitive Voice and those of the Art Critic.
Did what I shared resonate with you? Do you tend to turn music on when you’re in the studio or find silence to be a part of your own process?
I’d love to hear your thoughts, leave a comment and join the conversation.
Good to hear these words again...such a positive reminder of how we can sabotage ourselves and play it "safe"...listening can make the difference...
I remember watching this when you first made it. I was deeply moved then, and in rewatching it the wisdom still feels fresh & powerful.
It's somehow still an "Aha!" moment to be reminded, yet again, that the ways through so many insights & revelations need to be navigated over & over before those paths become well-worn enough to simply proceed without obstruction.
My own place of deep knowing can still be hard to find, but it feels closer & more familiar every time I get there. Thank you for your tireless laying of breadcrumbs!
